National Children's Study - Sun Valley
The National Children’s Study (NCS) is the largest, long term study of environmental influences on children’s health and development from pre-birth to age 21 ever conducted in the United States. The goal of NCS in Los Angeles County is to follow 4,000 children in randomly selected neighborhoods.
The goal of the Study is to improve the health and well-being of children and contribute to understanding the role various factors have on health and disease. Findings from the Study will be made available as the research progresses, making potential benefits known to the public as soon as possible. Beginning in late 2010, the NCS will officially launch and begin recruiting women ages 18 to 49 who are pregnant or likely to become pregnant in an initial set of 14 randomly selected neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles county. Many families in Sun Valley will receive an invitation to participate in the Study by mail. Eligible participants will complete confidential surveys - the NCS is an observational study and does not involve any medications or treatments. Based at the UCLA Center for Healthier Children, Families, and Communities and in close association with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the Study is a cooperative effort joining universities, community groups, local health departments, and hospitals.
