The federal government is requiring that this additional funding, $616 million of which is specifically designated to high-speed rail, be used to extend construction south toward Bakersfield. The funding announcement also included $8 million for Caltrans. The California High-Speed Rail Authority Board this month selected the starting point for the project’s Southern California-to-Bay Area construction. Initial construction is slated to begin in 2012. The additional Recovery Act funding was redistributed after nearly $1.2 billion was returned from other states. California’s high-speed rail project has received the most federal funding of any state in the nation, totaling more than $3.1 billion in 2010. # # # See also Press Release: U.S. Department of Transportation Redirects $1.195 Billion in High-Speed Rail Funds CONTACT: Rachel Wall Below you will find some pertinent updates from the San Fernando Valley office of Mayor Antonio R. On Friday, December 10, 2010, at about 6:30 p.m., a three car traffic collision occurred on Lankershim Boulevard south of Tuxford Street. A white 2009 Chrysler mini-van, traveling in a northerly direction on Lankershim Boulevard crossed into opposing lanes of traffic, and collided head-on with a 1980 gold Chevrolet Chevette, fatally injuring the driver. His name has not yet been released pending notification of his family. No other injuries have been reported at this time. Investigators are looking for the driver of the white mini-van who left the scene on foot without rendering help or providing identifying information as required by law. The driver of the Toyota, later identified as a 46-year-old Oscar Contreras, also left the scene in his car.
